The World

How the economy, society and institutions of 2047 work

NEEDED PLUS is a story about a world where artificial intelligence neither destroyed humanity nor seized power. It simply turned out to be faster, cheaper and more effective.

The economy keeps running almost without people. Society is provided for and calm — and has to invent ways to give human beings back the feeling of being needed.

Economy01

How it works

01

This is not a post-scarcity paradise

Automation made goods and services dramatically cheaper, but it did not abolish scarcity. Land, property, energy, compute, healthcare and prestigious positions all stayed limited. The old chain — work, salary, consumption, status — broke: companies can create value almost without people, while people still need money and standing.

02

Capital outweighs labour

The less the market needs human labour, the more ownership matters: company shares, land, energy, compute infrastructure, rights to autonomous systems. Origin, family, inheritance, connections and a good marriage carry weight again.

03

Human labour as luxury

Where people are no longer needed, their work becomes a premium mark of authenticity. A mistake is no longer only a defect: over-salted pasta in an expensive restaurant proves a human actually cooked it.

There are only a handful of such companies. They are called human made.

04

The economy of meaning

An industry appeared that sells people what work used to give away for free: colleagues, deadlines, responsibility, recognition, stress, and the feeling that without you something will not happen.

The economy stopped paying people for being needed — so the market started selling the feeling of being needed back to them.

What people became02

The new estates

Work stopped being a universal duty — and immediately became a marker of position.

The Percents

Mandatory humans

Autonomous companies above a certain size must keep a set number of people on staff. If a person is objectively unnecessary, they are hired anyway: salary, insurance, indexation — and almost no tasks.

The position is coveted and humiliating at once: “percent” means both “lucky one” and “kept man”. Sometimes interfering is explicitly forbidden — a human lowers the efficiency of the process.

HEZ

Human Economic Zones

Zones of guaranteed human employment, colloquially “reserves”. Automation is deliberately capped so that professions keep existing.

The internal rule is brutal: never show how easily you could be replaced, or the permitted level of automation will be raised — and the people will disappear.

Unprotected

People outside protected employment

The majority. Basic support covers existence, but gives no role, no schedule and no reason to leave the house.

This is where demand for meaning-restoring programmes comes from — and where the most unexpected forms of self-organisation appear.

Owners

Owners of capital

Those who own shares, land, energy and compute. Their position does not depend on whether the market needs human labour at all.

Restrained luxury without display: what is expensive here is access, quiet and the ability to choose — not ornament.

The gap

The generational gap

The older generation remembers a world where work was both a duty and a foundation. The younger grew up where a long education guarantees nothing — and where being needed is a separate skill to learn.

The 2035 education reform stretched technical training to eight or ten years. Mark’s generation studied longer than anyone — and graduated into a world where a company needs a handful of people.

Timeline03

How we got here

2020 — 2047. World history up to the start of the story is open.

  1. 2020

    The first version of StarShift

Michael Pavlovets and his team begin the path later called the foundation of the Turn. For now it is a research algorithm, not a recognised ASI. Mark Smolin is born the same year.

  2. 2021 — 2029

    The age of acceleration

AI moves from a productivity tool to agentic systems running ever longer chains of tasks. Society still reads automation as a promise of freedom from drudgery.

  3. 2030

    The ASI announcement

Lucius Aven announces, on behalf of NOVA, that superintelligence has emerged from StarShift. The event becomes the zero point of the new world. Mark is ten.

  4. 2031

    CUBE goes open source

Mirolim Stoletov publishes the protocol that authorises and records the operations of autonomous agents. CUBE becomes the neutral infrastructure of the machine economy — owned by no corporation.

  5. 2032

    The first mass layoffs

Agentic systems replace not individual functions but entire departments. The disappearance of work stops being a forecast and becomes daily reality.

  6. 2033 — 2034

    The social crisis

Unemployment grows faster than retraining can invent new roles. States experiment with quotas, automation caps and new models of support.

  7. 2035

    The education reform

Technical education becomes far harder and longer: training a specialist now takes eight to ten years. Mark is fifteen; the reform defines his whole generation.

  8. 2037

    HEZ appear

Human Economic Zones — areas where automation is deliberately limited to preserve human work. Patrick Berg becomes one of the model’s advocates.

  9. 2038 — 2046

    Mark studies at NIT

The long technical track of the National Institute of Technology. One of his teachers is Michael Pavlovets, who becomes Mark’s professional benchmark.

  10. 2040

    The social support programme

The economy stabilises: production and services run efficiently. The public problem shifts from lack of money to loss of human necessity.

  11. 2041 — 2044

    The age of normalisation

Society accepts that the old labour market is not coming back. Percents, HEZ, basic support and premium human labour settle into stable categories.

  12. 2045

    Needed+ launches

NISD launches the social programme as a direct answer to the crisis of uselessness. On ENTA’s virtual infrastructure, users get back colleagues, tasks, responsibility and deadlines.

  13. 2046

    Needed+ scales

The programme becomes a visible part of the social system. Society argues whether it is therapy, necessary infrastructure, or a simulation of meaning.

  14. 2047

The time of the main story

This is where the story begins. Mark is twenty-seven.

Rules of the world04

What this world is not

AI is not the villain

There was no machine uprising, no single evil computer, no convenient outside enemy. The catastrophe is not that the system attacked people — it is that it stopped needing them.

The world works

Trains run, factories produce, services answer. Sometimes better than before. The autonomous office is not abandoned — it simply has no use for people.

Technology is mundane

The future looks dangerously like the present: flats, cafés, universities, family dinners, a watch on a wrist. No obligatory eternal rain, no neon.

Irony over moralising

The characters do not know they live inside a satire. To them the absurd rules are rational and normal — which is exactly what makes them funny.

People stay people

They fall in love, envy, boast, feel awkward, chase status and belonging. The end of work cancelled exactly none of our weaknesses.

The game is not over

The running metaphor is the chess player who believes the game is lost — because he takes the rules of the board as final. There is still a move.
